How DVD Ripping Tools Evolved: From DVD Decrypter to HandBrake
A software history of the ripping era — the free tools that defined a decade of home archiving, and what survived the legal crackdowns.
Between 2001 and 2007, a small ecosystem of free Windows utilities turned ordinary PCs into disc-archiving stations. Their history is a useful lens on the era: each tool solved a specific, practical problem, and the ecosystem’s shape was dictated as much by legal letters as by engineering.
This is a history of that software — not a guide to using it. Most of these tools’ original functions sit in a legal gray zone in many countries, and the point here is to understand the era, not to recreate it.
DVD Decrypter: the default
The era’s defining tool was DVD Decrypter, written by a British developer known only as “LIGHTNING UK!”. Released around 2001, it did one thing brilliantly: it read a disc’s contents — menus, chapters, video, audio, subtitles — and copied them to a hard drive, quickly and for free. It became the first step of nearly every backup pipeline of the decade, and its distinctive progress window is a core memory for a generation of home archivists.
Its end tells you about the era. In 2005, after legal pressure from Macrovision, the developer stopped updating it. The final version’s About box carried a quiet epitaph for the project. The tool lived on in forks and imitators, but the golden age of the freeware decrypter was effectively over.
The compress-and-burn era
The middle of the decade belonged to a specific problem: a movie disc held up to about 8.5 GB, but the cheap recordable discs everyone bought held 4.7. DVD Shrink, released in 2004, became the answer — it re-encoded and stripped extras to squeeze a film onto a single recordable disc. The “shrink and burn” workflow defined the era’s backup culture and powered an enormous market in blank media.
HandBrake: the survivor
The most important long-term story is HandBrake. Eric Petit, known online as “titer,” started it in 2003 on the BeOS operating system as a way to transcode DVDs into portable formats. Unlike its contemporaries, HandBrake was open source, cross-platform, and — crucially — positioned itself as a transcoder, not a decrypter; it expects you to hand it already-decrypted content. That positioning, plus genuinely excellent engineering, let it survive the crackdowns that killed everything around it. HandBrake is still actively developed today and remains the standard open-source video transcoder, long after the problem it was built to solve has faded.
MakeMKV and the lossless turn
The last major arrival was MakeMKV, first released around 2007. It represented a philosophical shift: instead of re-encoding, it remuxed a disc’s streams untouched into a single MKV file — a perfect, lossless copy of the content. It is still maintained, a bridge between the ripping era and the modern world of personal media servers like Plex and Jellyfin, where a shelf of hard drives replaced the shelf of spindles.
What the ecosystem proves
Look at the survivors — HandBrake, MakeMKV — and a pattern emerges. The tools that lasted were the ones built on open standards and honest engineering rather than on circumventing a specific lock. The DVD ripping era was a brief, strange window in software history: a time when the most popular media tools on earth were free, anonymous, and legally ambiguous. The window closed, but the habits it created — the personal media library, the transcode-and-sync workflow, the expectation that your movies should follow you across devices — never went away.
